Hot cathode tubes are not suitable for thin fluorescent tubes because the structure of their electrodes cannot be miniaturized. Therefore, hot cathode tubes are mainly used in high-power fluorescent tubes. Almost all fluorescent tubes used for general lighting are this. On the other hand, cold cathode tubes are mainly used for back lighting (backlight) for liquid crystals due to their thin characteristics. Furthermore, recently, color cold cathode tubes are often used in decorations such as automobiles, and they are attracting attention. If you see blue or purple trim in a car passing by, it's a cold cathode tube. In addition, compared with the hot cathode tube, the cold cathode tube has the characteristics of long service life, small size and low power.
