What is LED TV Backlight Strip?

An LED TV backlight strip is a component used in modern LED TVs to illuminate the screen from behind. This strip is made up of numerous light-emitting diodes (LEDs) arranged in a linear fashion. The primary purpose of the backlight strip is to provide uniform brightness and enhance the picture quality by illuminating the LCD (liquid crystal display) panel. This backlighting helps produce vibrant colors and sharp images, contributing to a better viewing experience. LED backlight strips are energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan compared to other types of backlighting technologies, such as CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamps).

Principle And Types Of LED TV Backlight Strips

LED TV light strips are a group of light sources used for backlighting, the main purpose of which is to improve the contrast and brightness of the TV. The principle of backlight strip for TV is to illuminate the LCD screen with white LED backlight module to improve the image quality. Backlight strips for TVs can be categorized into two types: Edge-Lit light emitting diodes (D-LED) and Direct-Lit light emitting diodes (E-LED).

D-LED TV backlight strips

Direct-Lit LED: Direct-Lit products evenly distribute the LEDs behind the panel, allowing the backlight to reach the entire screen evenly and the picture details to be more detailed and lifelike.

E-LED TV Light Strip

Edge-Lit TV light strip is the mainstream of TV backlighting nowadays, which puts LED light strips on the four sides of the TV screen, and diffuses the light through a special reflector to illuminate the whole TV screen. This type of light bar can not only improve the display quality of the TV, but also better energy saving effect.

Ways to use the TV backlight strips

The following points need to be noted when using the TV backlight strip

Reasonable control of TV brightness

TV brightness should not be too high or too low, too high brightness will irradiate the human retina, may lead to retinal damage, too low brightness will make people's eyes feel tired.

Clean the TV screen frequently

Frequent cleaning of the TV screen can avoid the damage of dust and other substances on the TV screen, and at the same time can improve the display effect of the TV.

Pay attention to the environment

Pay attention to the environment of the TV, in a particular environment, adjust the TV light can make the TV display brighter.

Difference Between Direct-Lit Tv Light Strips And Edge-Lit Tv Light Strips

DLED, Direct-Lit LED: Emphasizing excellent picture quality performance

Straight-down products evenly distribute the LED lights behind the panel, so that the backlight can be evenly transmitted to the entire screen, and the details of the picture are more delicate and realistic.

As a result, the performance of straight-down LED technology in terms of picture quality is more perfect, and the advantages in terms of picture regulation are superior to those of side-entry LED technology.

Adopted straight down type LED TV also divided the LED backlight into a number of cells, in the display of black, directly turn off the light of its corresponding LED area, it can show a very perfect black.

As a result, straight-down LED technology backlighting renders images more accurately and shows excellent color and light/dark contrast effects.

ELED, Edge-Lit LED: Emphasizing ultra-thin energy-saving leadership

Edge type, on the other hand, installs LEDs at the bezel of the panel so that the light source is illuminated from the side. While this minimizes thickness, it reduces the number of LEDs by a factor of seven, and therefore tends to reduce the brightness of the screen in an "X" pattern (i.e., the periphery is brighter than the center).

The slimmer size is the biggest highlight of the edge-type LED TV. Is "thin and light" important or not? Industry experts said that consumers care more about electronic products, "thin and light" characteristics, which is obvious product quality improvement, is a research and development capabilities and manufacturing technology is the ultimate visual embodiment of the appearance of the product every inch of the reduction means that the technology to improve.

In addition, the edge of the LED TV is relatively more energy efficient.

How DLED TV Backlight Work

An DLED TV backlight is just a special kind of LCD where the backlight consists of LEDs instead of CCFLs. That's the core principle behind LED TV technology and how it works. These televisions are far more energy efficient than their CCFL cousins and also a lot smaller. It is because of their relatively smaller size that LED televisions can afford to be so thin when compared to other types of televisions.

While DLED TV backlight are often touted as a major innovation and a new kind of television, they are no more than a special kind of LCD television where the backlight is made of LEDs. In terms of picture quality, there is absolutely no difference between a CCFL LCD television screen (what you're probably referring to when you mention an LCD television), and an LED television.

To be sure, engineers have tried to design full-fledged LED televisions, where the screen itself is made of LEDs. In these televisions, the panel isn't liquid crystal but instead has pixels consisting of LEDs. Each pixel has 3 individual LEDs; red, green, and blue. Such televisions are of much better quality than LCD televisions.

However, they are also significantly more expensive to manufacture and would not be affordable to a majority of consumers. Similar technology is being used to make DLED televisions, which are trying to look into organic light emitting diodes rather than artificial ones. They are still the most expensive televisions out there, but there are hopes that they will become more affordable for the masses with time.

What Causes DLED TV Backlight to Fail?

Most hardware operates at voltages between 1.8 V - 5.2 V. However, the DLED TV backlight circuit operates at about 15 - 20 V. At this higher voltage, the backlight components are more prone to damage when a short circuit occurs. The high voltage backlight circuit is also prone to corrosion from water damage.

The Most Common Causes of Display Failures
● The LCD screen - LCD failure can occur from drop damage, water damage, or it can simply be the result of a defective part.
● The DLED TV backlight filter - When a short in the backlight circuit occurs, the thin wire inside the filter breaks, severing power from the backlight LEDs.
● The backlight diode - Like the backlight filters, the DLED TV backlight diode is a fragile component. In cases where a backlight filter is particularly burned up, you'll often find that the diode has failed as well. Diode failure in the absence of filter damage is rare, but it can happen.

Backlight Short Circuits
The most common cause of a self-induced short occurs from working on the device with the battery still connected. Even when the screen is dark, there is voltage in the DLED TV backlight circuit. A slipped pair of tweezers or misalignment of the LCD connector can short the backlight circuit to ground. Avoid self-induced shorts by always disconnecting the battery before working on a device.
Another cause of backlight shorts is faulty assembly procedures. During device fabrication, these solder joints are protected by piece of black tape—however, during the screen refurbishing process some manufacturers neglect to replace the tape, apply it misaligned, or fail to apply it securely. As a result, the screen initially works during testing—but once the metal LCD shield is installed, the exposed solder joints touch the grounded frame, shorting the DLED TV backlight circuit.
Backlight shorts can occur when the latch for the ZIF connector securing the LCD flex is missing. The LCD flex slides out an angle and the high voltage backlight pin contacts the ground pin, causing a short circuit.

Other Common Causes of Backlight Failure
Water damage is a frequent source of DLED TV backlight problems. Water will corrode the LCD connector pin/pad junction, which breaks the electrical path to the connector and can damage the filter.
Backlight circuit failure can also occur from damage to the electrical traces on the circuit board. If the electrical traces buried in the board are inadvertently severed—for example, from trying to fasten the board with too large a screw—the backlight circuit will not conduct power to the backlight LEDs.

Diagnosing a Backlight Failure
To diagnose whether your device is “dead” or just has a malfunctioning screen, try connecting it to your computer. If the computer recognizes the device, then the problem probably resides with the LCD screen or backlight circuit.
The good news is that nearly all backlight failures are repairable. Once the damaged component is identified it can simply be replaced.

How Does ELED TV Backlight Work?

ELED TV backlight displays illuminate the LCD panel by setting a row of LEDs along the top and bottom edges of a screen, or ringing the perimeter of the TV frame with LED lights. This light is then distributed across the back of the LCD panel with a special diffuser light guide, a semi-transparent sheet of plastic that allows the light from the LED in the TV bezel to illuminate a larger portion of the display.

It's a very cost effective way to light a TV, since it uses the least amount of LEDs. It also offers some level of dynamic backlight control for HDR support. On sets that are equipped to do so, portions of the edge lighting strips can be darkened or dimmed to provide deeper blacks, or brightened to accentuate brighter portions of the screen. However, since they don't directly light the LCD panel from behind, the effect is considerably muted when compared to other backlight technologies.

Because these edge-mounted LEDs can be individually dimmed or brightened, edge lit TVs can offer some measure of dynamic backlight control for high dynamic range content. This can be done in two ways.

First, the LEDs at the top and bottom of the display can be dimmed to alter the brightness in a vertical stripe, from the top to bottom of the display. This divides the display into 8-16 distinct dimming zones.

Second, top and bottom rows of LEDs can be dimmed independently, effectively doubling the number of dimming zones.

Both of these methods suffer from the use of broad, diffuse dimming zones, which mute the HDR effect considerably, and will often illuminate unwanted portions of the display, an effect called haloing.

Other Common Causes of ELED TV Backlight Failure

Water damage is a frequent source of ELED TV backlight problems.

The most common cause of a self-induced short occurs from working on the device with the battery still connected. Even when the screen is dark, there is voltage in the backlight circuit. A slipped pair of tweezers or misalignment of the LCD connector can short the backlight circuit to ground. Avoid self-induced shorts by always disconnecting the battery before working on a device.

Another cause of ELED TV backlight shorts is faulty assembly procedures. During device fabrication, these solder joints are protected by piece of black tape—however, during the screen refurbishing process some manufacturers neglect to replace the tape, apply it misaligned, or fail to apply it securely. As a result, the screen initially works during testing—but once the metal LCD shield is installed, the exposed solder joints touch the grounded frame, shorting the backlight circuit.

ELED TV backlight shorts can occur when the latch for the ZIF connector securing the LCD flex is missing. The LCD flex slides out an angle and the high voltage backlight pin contacts the ground pin, causing a short circuit.

Asked Questions

Q: What causes ELED TV backlight to fail?

A: In addition to electrical traces on the circuit board, backlight circuit failure can also be caused by water damage. Water can break the electrical path to the connector, which can lead to a short. A defective LED will block the connection between the LCD panel and the LEDs.

Q: What is the lifespan of ELED TV backlight?

A: The life of an LED light at maximum, or near-max brightness, is 40,000 to 60,000 hours, or 4.5 to 6.8 years. Since your TV isn't on 24 hours a day, it should last much longer than that.

Q: Should the backlight on my TV be on or off?

A: You'll need to avoid setting the ELED TV backlight too high, which can result in a washed-out image and reduce the overall picture quality. Setting it between 10-20% is a good starting point for most environments. From there, you can adjust the settings based on your preferences and the specific content you're watching.

Q: How do I know if my ELED TV backlight is working?

A: The first step is to determine if the TV's backlights are working if you don't have an image on the screen. The easiest way to see if the backlights are working is to look through the TV's back cover and plug the TV in and turn on the TV and see if there is any light on the back.

Q: What causes a ELED TV backlight to burn out?

A: Sudden power surges, physical damage, moisture/water, and faulty backlight bulbs are all possible causes of your backlight failing.

Q: How do I know if my ELED TV backlight is broken?

A: Use a flashlight test: Take a bright flashlight and hold it one to two inches away from the TV screen. If you can't see any image or it appears very dim, it suggests a problem with the backlight .

Q: What is the function of ELED TV backlight in TV?

A: The Backlight option changes the intensity of the lighting source for the TV. The backlight should be adjusted to suit your lighting environment. In a low lighting environment the backlight should be set lower and in a bright light environment the backlight should be set higher.

Q: How do you prevent ELED TV backlight failure?

A: To prevent this from happening, it is good practice to use power supply with short circuit protection and equip the LED board with a diode in parallel to the LED string in reverse polarity.

Q: How do you check ELED TV backlight?

A: Hold a flashlight up to the LCD panel face. Around the flashlight you should see text, pictures, or graphics that you would normally see if the backlight was working properly.

Q: What is the lifespan of a backlight?

A: If used at high or maximum brightness, which is necessary for outdoor applications, an ELED TV backlight will last between 40,000 to 60,000 hours. Or, about 4.5 to 7 years.

Q: What is the lifespan of a ELED TV backlight screen?

A: A. The estimated ELED TV backlight lifetime is about 30,000 hours or eight years of use at ten hours per day. (However, lifetime is not guaranteed for eight years.) The lifetime means the time from the initial brightness level to deteriorate 50% in normal operation.

Q: Which TV does not use ELED TV backlight?

A: OLED stands for “organic light-emitting diode.” In an OLED TV, each individual pixel emits its own light, so no separate backlight is required. Because each individual pixel can go from bright to fully off, OLED TVs can generate high-contrast images with truly deep black tones.

Q: Does ELED TV backlight affect picture quality?

A: This isn't helpful to picture quality at all, as it reduces contrast, shadow detail in dark areas, and color accuracy.

Q: What are the different types of ELED TV backlight?

A: As for lighting, there are currently three types used on televisions: Edge Lit, Full Array, and Direct Lit—and what you see on your screen is directly impacted by which type of lighting your TV uses.

Q: Do LED TVs have a ELED TV backlight?

A: LED TV is a type of LCD television that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to backlight the display instead of the cold cathode fluorescent lights (CCFLs) used in standard LCD televisions. LED TVs are more formally known as LED-backlight LCD television.

Q: What destroys ELED TV backlight?

A: In some cases, the ELED TV backlight may be a result of a power supply failure, the driver circuit or the LED itself. Occasionally, the power supply will fail, which prevents the LEDs from turning on. In other cases, the power supply may be insufficient or the LEDs are burned out.

Q: What is the lifespan of ELED TV backlight?

A: The life of an LED light at maximum, or near-max brightness, is 40,000 to 60,000 hours, or 4.5 to 6.8 years. Since your TV isn't on 24 hours a day, it should last much longer than that.

Q: Do ELED TV backlight dim over time?

A: LEDs slowly dim over time; half life is the time, in hours, of how long the backlight can operate before its brightness is at 50% of what it originally was when first turned on. So if the half-life is rated at 50K hours, then the brightness of your backlight will be half as bright at 50K hours.

Q: What is the difference between LED and ELED TV backlight?

A: LEDs have a longer lifespan than other types of backlights, which means you'll get more years out of your TV before needing to replace it. The biggest difference between LED TVs and other types of flat panel displays is that they are more energy efficient.

Q: How much ELED TV backlight bleed is acceptable for TV?

A: How much backlight bleed is acceptable? It depends on how much you're willing to tolerate. Some bleed is normal when the screen is at full brightness, but it may be less noticeable if you dim the screen.

Q: What is the difference between LED and DLED TV backlight?

A: In a DLED TV, the LED lights are evenly distributed behind the entire surface of the display. This allows for more precise control over local dimming, brightness, and contrast compared to some other LED backlighting technologies.

Q: How do I know if my DLED TV backlight is bad?

A: The first step is to determine if the TV's backlights are working if you don't have an image on the screen. The easiest way to see if the backlights are working is to look through the TV's back cover and plug the TV in and turn on the TV and see if there is any light on the back.

Q: Is DLED TV backlight better than OLED?

A: Despite recent improvements to LED/LCD displays, generally, OLED monitors offer superior viewing angles. This means that the display will not be distorted or negatively impacted by the angle you view it from.

Q: What happens when a backlight goes out on a TV?

A: An LED backlight fails when the LEDs have damaged the screen's pixels. The affected LEDs will still conduct electricity, but they won't produce light and will result in dark spots on the screen. In some cases, the DLED TV backlight may be a result of a power supply failure, the driver circuit or the LED itself.

Q: What is the lifespan of a DLED TV backlight?

A: So, what happens when a TV starts to fail? In most LCD TVs, the backlight is the first component to go — but that takes a while, with common estimates of 40,000 to 60,000 lifetime hours for a standard LED backlight.

Q: What kills DLED TV backlights?

A: Water damage is a frequent source of DLED TV backlight problems. Water will corrode the LCD connector pin/pad junction, which breaks the electrical path to the connector and can damage the filter. Backlight circuit failure can also occur from damage to the electrical traces on the circuit board.

Q: Is it expensive to replace a DLED TV backlight?

A: DLED TV backlight replacements cost between $100 and $200 on average, depending on the television size and scale and the type and number of lights required. If you have LED lights, parts may be more expensive, leading to higher total costs.

Q: How do you prevent DLED TV backlight failure?

A: To prevent this from happening, it is good practice to use power supply with short circuit protection and equip the LED board with a diode in parallel to the LED string in reverse polarity.

Q: How to fix DLED TV backlight bleed?

A: Backlight bleeding doesn't mean your laptop screen is broken, as some screen bleeding is normal. However, if the screen bleed is too noticeable, it can get annoying! To fix screen bleeding on your laptop, try adjusting your screen brightness and contrast, tilting the screen, or applying pressure to the screen's edges.

Q: Can you get DLED TV backlight fixed?

A: Yes, LED TVs can be repaired, but the repair cost will depend on the extent of the damage. The most common problem with an LED TV is a malfunctioning backlight, which can result in a black screen or a very dim picture.

Q: Can I replace LED in DLED TV backlight?

A: There have only two way to fix and replace LED TV backlight and repair your LED TV. One is changing entire LED strip and another is change single LED.

Q: Why do LED lights fail so often?

A: Unlike incandescent light bulbs, LEDs don't produce light using heat. This is part of what makes them so energy efficient. The downside is that their components can be sensitive to overheating, which can cause them to burn out prematurely.

Q: What is one problem with backlighting?

A: While it is true that backlighting can cause your subject to squint if they are looking directly at the light source, it doesn't necessarily mean that this is always a problem. In fact, backlighting can be used creatively to produce artistic and visually appealing results.

Q: Do all LED TVs have DLED TV backlight bleed?

A: Unfortunately, all LED TVs have some imperfections as a result of the backlight. Backlight bleed can include flashlighting, which looks like a flashlight has been pointed across the corners of the television, and clouding, which looks like brighter patches on parts of the screen.

Q: Does DLED TV backlight bleed go away?

A: Can backlight bleed go away on its own? Sometimes. All LCD screens have some backlight bleed at first, but as the pressure around the panel weakens with use, it will become less noticeable. If you've had your device for a while, the backlight bleed probably isn't going away.

Q: How do I know if my DLED TV backlight is bad?

A: Shine a flashlight on the screen to see if there's a picture. If you can see a picture with the flashlight, then your DLED TV backlight is burnt out. If the backlight is the modern one that lights up the wall area behind the TV, then it is obvious as no light will be cast on the wall.

Q: Is DLED TV backlight the same as brightness on TV?

A: "Brightness - changes the colours of the pixels on the LCD screen. For example if you turn the Brightness up high, black pixels will change into light grey pixels. Backlight - is the intensity of the fluorescent lamp behind the screen that makes the picture more intense.

Q: Do DLED TV backlights dim over time?

A: LEDs slowly dim over time; half life is the time, in hours, of how long the DLED TV backlight can operate before its brightness is at 50% of what it originally was when first turned on. So if the half-life is rated at 50K hours, then the brightness of your backlight will be half as bright at 50K hours.

Q: What is the best color to backlight a TV?

A: Because the lights inside your HDTV or monitor are typically calibrated to 6500K cool white, for optimal viewing, we recommend matching the color temperature to 6500K. To make your screen look its best, you should also choose bias lighting with a high color-rendering index (CRI).

Q: What is the lifespan of a DLED TV backlight?

A: So, what happens when a TV starts to fail? In most LCD TVs, the backlight is the first component to go — but that takes a while, with common estimates of 40,000 to 60,000 lifetime hours for a standard DLED TV backlight.
