Why do LED TVs need a backlight?

LED TVs require a led tv backlight to illuminate the screen from behind. The LCD panel in an LED TV does not emit light by itself, and therefore requires a light source to display images on the screen. The backlight shines through the liquid crystal layer on the screen, displaying the images in full color. Without a backlight, an LED TV would be completely dark. The backlight is usually provided by an array of LED lights located behind the screen of the TV.
